Does Tom Douglas need an introduction these days? A household name around Seattle for more than 20 years, Douglas now directs a mini culinary empire consisting of five restaurants, a bakery, a catering company and an events venue. Despite the success, it looks like he’s not content to rest on his laurels (as tasty as they may be).
Douglas recently announced that he, along with business partner and wife Jackie Cross, are teaming up with Vulcan Real Estate to extend their domain to South Lake Union. The new restaurant (or restaurants) will be housed in the Terry Avenue building, a historic landmark in the heart of Amazon headquarters. He has yet to announce his culinary intentions, but we’re sure it’s going to be dynamic and full of Northwest flavor. —Aislyn Greene
We attended an event at Inform Interiors (2032 Eighth Ave., 206-622-1608), celebrating the new collections from Cassina and Poltrona Frau. This dual force of Italian styling excites us with their immaculate designs, long histories and careful constructions. We were lucky enough to tour the showroom with the Vice President of the Poltrona Frau Group, Angelo Antenucci, who was happy to answer our questions and show us what makes the pieces special.
For example, it takes three years for an artisan to learn the construction techniques of Poltrona Frau pieces, and then each piece is handcrafted. The company, in production since 1912, still uses the same techniques of construction that were employed when the the pieces were first being produced. Cassina also has a long history, beginning in the early part of the 20th century. The company has its own research and development center, and continues to innovate by collaborating with many dynamic designers. As for Cassina, Antenucci describes it as like "a beautiful woman you see walking down the street—something draws you in."
Beautiful, indeed!

I have always loved Alessi’s Blow Up collection by Campana Fratelli (the basket currently sits on my coffee table—a wedding gift from a kind friend), and they’ve done it again—this time, in bamboo! I love to see old favorites come back with a twist. The mirrored chrome pieces were welded, and now the bamboo sticks are hand-tied together with natural raffia. Bamboo may be a step back in time with material, but it’s a step forward in design!
A big congratulations to three local design and architecture companies: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Cutler Anderson Architects and Bristol Design & Construction. And Sandra and Scott Gjesdahl of Bristol Design were named finalists in the Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Contest. Their entry is one of 50 finalists chosen from the nearly 1,400 entries, and they are the only finalists from the state of Washington. Congratulations!

Hi everyone! Angela here with a trend that’s a personal favorite. I love sleek metal and dark wood just as much as the next person, but right now it’s all about light wood paired with white. The look is warm, fresh and clean. Plus, this combo is versatile. Teamed up with glass and metal, it’s a pared-down look for a modern space. Adorned with linens and cozy materials, it’s rustic chic. Punched up with a bold accent color, it’s vibrant and fun. Check out these pieces to get this look going in your own home:
